5 Things To Do After a Winter Snowstorm

Snowstorms can be beautiful…until they start causing problems around your home. Once the snow stops falling, it’s important to do a quick check around your property to prevent small issues from turning into expensive repairs later on. Here are five smart things every homeowner should do after a winter snowstorm.

1. Clear snow away from your foundationSnow piled up against your home can melt and seep into basements or crawl spaces. Take some time to clear snow a few feet away from the foundation to help prevent moisture issues and water intrusion.

2. Check your roof and gutters (from the ground)You don’t need to climb a ladder for this. Just look up and check for heavy snow buildup, sagging areas, or hanging icicles. These can be signs of stress on your roof or blocked gutters that could cause leaks as things start to thaw.

3. Inspect outdoor pipes and hose bibsFreezing temperatures can cause outdoor pipes or hose connections to crack. As temperatures rise, check for leaks or visible damage so you can address them early before water becomes a bigger problem.

4. Look for signs of water inside your homeWalk through your home and pay close attention to ceilings, attic spaces, windows, and corners. Damp spots, stains, or discoloration are often early signs of leaks and should be addressed sooner rather than later.

5. Clear walkways and treat icy areasRemoving snow and treating ice isn’t just about convenience—it’s about safety. Clear walkways help prevent slips and falls and reduce liability, especially if you’re planning to have visitors or show your home.

A little post-storm maintenance goes a long way in protecting your home’s value and keeping everything running smoothly. If you’re thinking about selling this winter or just want advice on getting your home market-ready, we’re always here to help.
